We’re planning on making tamales for Christmas for the first time, so I was researching recipes and instructions for a “test run” before the big day. I saw one video with a product similar to this and knew that I “needed” this to have consistent tamales and to make things easier. I just made my first batch tonight, and it really did make it super simple and consistent!UPDATE: After making a few more small batches, I find it easier NOT to use this. A small square of parchment paper (or even a corn husk) makes it easy to quickly spread a spoon full of masa to the right thickness. I found that the masa would stick to this tool, which slowed me down a bit.

These things work amazingly and do just what they are intended for. My wife and I had to make 300 tamales for our sons football team and when we used to do them by hand it would take us forever and always the most difficult part was spreading the masa. I bought these to help us out and they did great, it is just they are not as wide as most husks so it does make smaller tamales then you get from a local vendor. It made the job go by a lot faster though while using these.

It takes a bit to figure it out but works quickly once you do. Also the consistency of the masa makes a huge difference. I used my normal recipe and it was a bit too dry to use with the tool. I added a bit more water multiple times until it started to work easier. I could see where this would be a great tool to buy multiples of if tamale making is a family event around the holidays. Much more enjoyable than using the back of a spoon. It would actually make a great stocking stuffer as well.

This tool definitely made the process easier and quicker! If you are a beginner like myself, keep in mind it’s not one swipe and you’re done though, but the more I used it the better I got. The thickness of the layer of masa was perfect. I recommend this tool.

The spreaders are very well made but for my first time making tamales, I did better with the spoon. I think the problem is me and if I spend more time practicing these will probably be perfect. I used them to do the initial spreading and then did the smoothing with a spoon. I am happy with the purchase.
