Honed all my 8 knives with 3 swipes each. No need to pay extra for a simple grooved honing steel.AS many have said, this is a soft steel HONING rod. It does not sharpen blades, it only straightens edges that have bent or warped from use. No metal is removed off the blade. If you chop a lot with your knife the edge will bend or get wavy and appear “dull”. you will absolutely need to hone it daily to straighten the edge.

Did not work as well as the hone it’s replacing.

If you are split between this and ceramic version let me convince you that this is better. Ceramic will eventually shatter wether you drop it accidentally or strike it with a heavy blade.Steel is also better balanced and heavier. Stays in place much better as you run the knife against it. There is also more tactile feedback from the knife. You can feel the blade being properly angled as you run it across.
