A number of years ago, I purchased high quality Henckels cutlery set, which came with a sharpening steel. The knives are awesome, the steel not so much. Yes, it did sharpen the knives, but it wasn’t long until the steel rod started coming out of the plastic handle. I tried several times using different adhesives to get the steel rod stay in the handle. It would work for a while, but eventually the steel rod would start falling out of the handle again. This made the sharpening steel pretty much unusable. So I purchased this sharpening steel as a replacement. I’ve used it several times now and it sharpens our knives better and with less strokes than the original Henckels steel and best of all, the steel rod is staying in the handle. Great product and sharpens very well!

This is a little more expensive than the (at the time) “amazon choice” which was very bad, so I returned it for this. The quality of this steel is so much higher and for only 10 bucks more.I am very happy. The only thing I don’t like is the text carved into the steel. it will catch your knives so you have to watch out for it. I put tape over mine so I knew to stay away from there.

I read where some said this was not sharpening their knives. If you need to sharpen your knife, then this is the wrong tool. You need something that will actually remove steel and there are numerous kinds here on Amazon that will do the trick. But if your knife has simple become dull due to use, then it needs to be honed and this is the tool for you. Iβve received a few knives that werenβt very sharp out of the box and a couple swipes on this steel made them as sharp as you would ever need for cooking applications. I like to hone my knives after every few uses to keep them scary sharp. I read an article that recommended a honing steel for twice the money, but Iβm not a chef and do my cooking here at the house. For my purposes this rod is perfect. I am very pleased with this purchase. Use it right and your knives will never disappoint you. It works. PS – the fact that the manufacturer name is embossed on the rod and could potentially ruin your knife is anal to the tenth degree. One second of your time and a twist of the wrist negates this problem. Donβt let that stop you from getting a quality tool at an awesome price. This definitely works.

I like Mercer, I think it is overall a great brand. Their bread knives are excellent, you get a lot for your money. But this honing rod here, well I just don’t feel like it works very well. I have one at work, not sure what the brand is, but that old thing works better than this one. It’s not that it doesn’t work at all, it just doesn’t work very well in my opinion. I have to run my knife over it many many times before it finally gets the blade straightened, while at work I only have to run it a few times. The material it’s made of, or possibly the surface pattern of it, is definitely different than what I have at work. It doesn’t seem to be able to do what it needs to do. Maybe it’s just me, but that’s the result I have had here at home. So I’m going to try a different brand, have not settled on anything yet.

This is a nicely weighted, nicely shaped steel. Some have mentioned that the raised lettering was a problem. It is right against the hand guard and I donβt bring my blades that close to the handle so it is not a problem for me.

It works ad advertised but the quality of construction is nothing like the knives.
