After submitting the 2-star review below, I was contacted by the seller who informed me that they had made improvements in the display. He offered to send me the improved model at no cost to try out, and that’s some damn good customer service and attention to detail. Kudos for that. The display on the upgraded model does seem to have been improved, which makes it much easier to use. I have included pictures of the two thermometers side-by-side. The first pic is with the backlights lit on both. I had to take the picture in the dark because the reflection of the overhead lights didn’t give a good representation. The new one is on the left. It is a bit easier to read when lit. The two big improvements are that the backlight stays on much longer, and after it shuts off the display is still fairly readable WITHOUT having to press any buttons. (On the old one I had to press a button to “wake it up”, and on doing so as often as not would end up inadvertently changing to Celsius or changing the meat type or something). I would say that with the display improvements this is now a useful thermometer. The improved display and the proactive customer service certainly deserve another star each, so I am changing my rating to 4-stars. If they were to address the other design issues I mentioned previously, it would certainly be a 5-star unit (those issues ARE still present on the new model).I was happy when I first got it. The size is nice. The magnet is a great idea, and it’s nice and strong. Then I used it a few times.First off, the jack the probe plugs into isn’t great. It felt quite loose at first, until I decided it wasn’t seated properly. It took a lot of wiggling and WAY too much force to get it securely plugged in, but it has been quite secure ever since. When you turn it on, the units always default to Celsius. Since I live in the US, I happen to use Fahrenheit, so I have to switch it EVERY SINGLE TIME. Now, I realize that most of the world uses Celsius, and here in the US we’re kinda sticks in the mud for not using the much more logical metric system- but it is what it is, and if you use Celsius, you ALWAYS use Celsius, and if you use Fahrenheit, you ALWAYS use Fahrenheit. There should be a switch to select units permanently instead of the stupid switch to select temp or timer. Who needs a timer? I have a timer on my stove. I have a timer on my microwave. I have unlimited timers on my phone, and so do you. A units switch makes far more sense, but instead I have a timer I will never use. Then there is the display. The backlight stays on just long enough for the temperature to stabilize once you put the probe in a piece of meat, then conveniently shuts off lol. The display IS still on, and if the angle is just right you can read it, but in bright light (like if you’re grilling) forget it! I’d be happy to sacrifice battery life for the option to keep the backlight on.There’s a bunch of selections for meat types and doneness, and that’s fine- it always gives you the probe temp- but if you don’t select one, it eventually starts incessantly beeping until you do. I can see the convenience of having that feature, because you may not know off the top of your head what the temp for lamb is- but don’t INSIST that I choose! Annoying. The cord on the probe is a bit of a pain because it tends to kink- but that may be the nature of temperature probes, so I don’t count that against the unit. So, I went to use it tonight. Turn it on, change to Fahrenheit, fight with the cord, and stick it to the stove. I start cooking my salmon, and BEEP BEEP BEEP…I didn’t confirm my meat choice, so I have to deal with that while the clock is ticking on my expensive fish. Ok, confirm, insert the probe… and the damn display backlight shuts off! Grrrrr!I suppose I’ll keep it, because I hate waste, but I was VERY close to chucking the damn thing. So make your choice, but I would never buy this thing again.

Overall this product is easy to use and is priced right. The display is easy to read and is back-lit for easy to read temp during those night time grilling adventures. The display operates on to (included) AAA batteries and can be propped up using the fold out stand on the back of the display or stuck to any metal surface using the built in magnets on the back of display. You can choose to use the pre-programmed settings for well, medium well, medium etc for 8 different types of meat (beef, fish, chicken etc) OR you can choose your own custom temperature. Iβve used other thermometers with easier to set custom temperatures but this one isnβt bad. Just have to long press the manual temp setting and adjust your temperature down. Youβll know when your meats done to the set temperature when the alarm sounds. Unlike many other thermometers, this thermometer can be used in the oven OR on the grill since it has the braided stainless steel probe cable. Some of the other thermometers are limited to oven only use due to grills having an open flame. Overall all easy to use and easy to read display.

I had this item for a while now but never used it until tonight. The face options are clear to see. I made an eye-round roast and wanted it more to the rare stage. Normally the end pieces are medium and the center is medium rare after its rests. It has a few options after you choose the meat. Rare, Medium Rare, Medium, and well done. I took a chance on the rare setting and am glad I did not pick the medium rare setting. The roast was perfect, pink inside not red. Medium rare would have been overcooked for us.You can set the option from Celsius to Fahrenheit. You choose the protein, then you choose the doneness. It also has the option to set it manually but I have not tried that. There is also just a timer option. The probe is nice and sturdy. The wire does seem a bit fragile so handle it with care. I had a few thermostats like this but I can honestly say that so far this is my favorite. Easy to use, easy to read. The meat turned out perfect.

The gauge came in handy for roasting my turkey. It was difficult to set the temperature on the digital guage. I place my finger on the icon indicated for setting temperature. It took several tries before theicon would blink indicating you could input your desired temperature.I am happy I made the purchase to be sure my bird was roasted at the right temperature. I had the probe in the breast which showed 165 degrees. I then put the probe deeper in the thigh of the turkey where it registered 142 degrees. The recommended temperature being 165. I cooked the turkey to 175 degrees with the probe deep in the thigh. The turkey turned out great. I am very happy with my purchase
