Years ago Westinghouse sold perhaps the worlds best can opener, the Sesame. The can opener cut the edge of the top of the can seal, left no sharp edge, and you could set the can top back on the can to cover it. The cutter really didn’t need cleaning because it never got close to the food in the can. The only disadvantage is that if you like to let the can lid fall into the can to help drain the liquid from the food inside you really couldn’t do that because the lid wouldn’t drop into the can.I thought when I purchased the Zyliss it might have reintroduced the engineering of the Sesame, sadly it does not.So, does that make it bad, not necessarily but it isn’t a perfect solution. Why not, well let’s first tackle that no sharp edge myth. It cuts the can on the outside just below the rolled steel edge. It leaves a brutally sharp and more exposed edge all around the top of the can facing up. It also leaves little pieces of torn paper from tge label that might end up in your food. Because the blade is cutting the can below the top you might find the contents leaking while it is cutting if the can is full or not sitting on a completely flat surface. The other potential problem is that by removing the entire top of the can, including the rolled steel weld, the can loses integrity with the top off so if you squeeze it too hard its contents will squeeze out. Of course the lid can’t easily be used to strain the liquid out of the can because tge cut off lid will not fit inside. So those are the mechanical issues with the design which would be common to all similar side cutting can openers. But does it work to simply open cans? Yes, it works just fine. It is easy to get started on the can and easy to remove and clean. It should work on any size and shape can. I had recently purchased a cordless Hamilton Beach can opener and compared to it this is 100% better and I trust it won’t die in 6 months like the Hamilton Beach or be virtually impossible to start. I will keep a regular, manual, top cut opener on hand though for when I have a can that I don’t feel this one is practical to use with.

Having purchased and returned three electric can openers (very recognizable name kitchen appliance name brands sold at large retailers) in the last year, I purchased this one from Amazon. The issue encountered with the name brand plug-ins was over time they would strip inside to where they would no longer rotate the can. I even tried the largest one that was available thinking it would be more robust. My un-technical opinion is that plastic gears now used and larger heavy cans do not mix well. That’s the beauty of this one–it sets on top of the can so there’s no additional stress on the opener components whether you’re opening a can of soup or large V8. Also, it’s compact so, unlike the plug-ins, you can keep this in a drawer so you’re not hauling out a can opener and plugging it in. As much as I like it, there are a couple of drawbacks, though. First, it’s a little tricky at times getting the opener started correctly, but you will get the hang of it. Second, it’s battery operated, which liberates you from the cord but also necessitates having fresh batteries ready when needed. I’ve found it an excellent replacement to the countertop and/or hand openers.

UPDATE I’ve been using this wonderful device since mid-April 2022 and it’s still working flawlessly and I haven’t yet had to change the battery. Highly recommend. This is the easiest to use can opener I have ever used! No fussing with trying to get a tooth in just the right place on the can. Just plop it on the can and push the button. When it’s done, push the button again. It backtracks for a second, then stops. The top of the can is not sharp and just lifts off. The top edge of the can itself is sharp, it’s just had the top cut off after all, but it’s not going to jump up and bite you.Such a relief to be able to open a can with my arthritic hands and fading vision.I just wish it was rechargeable, but even if the batteries only last a few cans-worth, I’d buy it again and again, it’s that good.

Very heavy for small can opener. 4 AA batteries, most others are 2AA batteries.Awkward, due to weight & couldnβt get seated properly. Iβm trying to get on correctly, it finally appeared correct. However, I Pushed button, it moved a few inches and then launched into psycho-mode!It just moved βstrangelyβ, then started coming UP & running crooked. I immediately tried to push button OFF. No Luck! It wouldnβt Shut Off, or let go of can. I grabbed it both Up & into my sink. It was making a mess out of my can of Tuna. Thankfully full of water & not Oil. It took a couple of minutes of fighting with it. Button Still did NOT WORK. Iβm Pushing button, while trying to get it to RELEASE. I live alone, so no one in house to lend me a spare hand. This May sound like NO PROBLEM for a younger person. I Am Not That, Iβm 70 yrs old with 2 bad wrists. I kept trying to push button while also trying to Release the Can. I now have a BIG SMELLING OF Overpowering TUNA. Some on counter, rest all over my sink.Somehow, I managed to move Cover on top to move open enough to pull one of the batteries. Just hoping to move 1 battery off terminal inside. Iβm not positive, I grabbed something on counter, it felt straight and had a point. One handed poke it along tip of battery & pop one edge off enough to break the circuit. So it FINALLY Stopped, but Still holding edge of can but on an angle. My Cat is on counter thinking βTuna Partyβ. I FINALLY WIGGLED IT OFF. What a Disaster! I whipped it down & Stuck into a Baggie. Zipped bag & then sat it down with All the batteries in it. If There was that 1 in a million Problem, I am Guaranteed to be that βONEβ! Sorry, I Do Not Want another New Can Opener to TRY. I now have a BRAND NEW, Excellent HAND Can Opener.

very easy to use except for women – like my wife & sister-in-law: clean cut lines along can; in our house the man uses it a nice mechanical improvement

I’ve owned this for 2 years now. Still works like new and it’s the best can opener I’ve owned so far. I love the side openen can openers. Yes it takes 4 AA batteries but they last if you buy alkaline or better.
